It’s been a month since last I wrote. I’m trying to recommit to blogging. Today I’m attempting this on my phone, which is likely a poor decision. And yet . . .
This is a little behind the scenes play by play. In the past month my agent sent pitch letters to 14 editors at various national publishers. Here’s a list:
Flat Iron /Macmillan
Mulholland/Hachette
Minotaur/Macmillan
Polis
Viking
Kensington
Putnam/PRH (Putnam Random House)
Grand Central/Hachette
Thomas & Mercer
Forge/Macmillan
Simon & Schuster
Soho
Blackstone
Veltri Productions
A few editors requested a long synopsis. Basically a one to two page plot breakdown. I’ve never been asked to produce that exact document before. But I got that done.
I won’t bore you with the longer plot breakdown. Here is the short synopsis that my agent sent out:
Once a punk, always a punk—that’s the version of himself that Kirby Furst buried when he abandoned the violent punk rocker days of his youth for life as a Chicago homicide detective. Decades later, as his estranged father lays dying of a rare incurable disease that could be lurking in his own genes, Kirby finds the unholy secrets of his punk days coming back to haunt him—and he must prove who he really is, once and for all.
Results so far: two editors have requested to read the full manuscript and those have been provided. One has said they are not interested. That leaves eleven remaining potential editors in the first round of submissions. Based on past experience, if I can get four editors to read the entire manuscript, odds are good I’ll get at least one offer.
Keep your fingers crossed. Please. It can’t hurt. I’ll post another update in a month or so.
